The GCISD Walk of Honor Committee is proud to announce the 2020 honorees of the GCISD Walk of Honor. These four individuals have served the District with honor, distinction, and service and will be honored permanently with plaques at Mustang Panther Stadium.

Joseph N. (Joe) Box
Joseph N. (Joe) Box moved to Grapevine when he was two years old and graduated from Grapevine High School in 1934. He was also a graduate of SMU and Harvard, and served in the US Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He began his career at First National Bank Grapevine in 1937 and became President in 1957 and Chairman in 1976. His long list of community service and awards included serving on the GCISD School Board and the Grapevine City Council. In addition he was a leader in the Grapevine Lions Club, Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, First Baptist Church and the Boy Scouts, among others. He helped establish the City of Grapevine and GCISD as the vibrant, successful community and school district we know today through his leadership on the Airport Zoning Board and other private and civic endeavors. He was married to Cecelia Cunningham Box and his two children, Cece and Jim, are also graduates of GHS.

Bob Burrus
Bob Burrus owned Burrus Supermarkets and has been a staunch supporter of GCISD for many decades. His five children are all graduates of GHS, and he was a leader in developing the co-op program at GCISD. He employed hundreds of students in his stores, and was an innovator in employing special needs students as well. He served as a GCISD trustee, and was also a leader in many clubs and organizations. He is the recipient of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce D. E. Box Citizen of the Year, and served as an officer of the Rotary Club, Chambers of Commerce, and athletic associations and booster clubs. He also has held leadership positions and been honored by various organizations in the food industry.

Phil Parker
Phil Parker is a graduate of Grapevine High School and served in the US Army and Army Reserve. He owns Willhoite’s Restaurant in Grapevine and has also been in the furniture, real estate and newspaper industries. At age 24 he was elected to the Grapevine City Council, where he was influential in helping develop the Grapevine Golf Course. He served as a GCISD trustee during times of construction and expansions of Dove Elementary, GMS, CMS and GHS. He also served on the boards of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. His many awards include the D. E. Box Citizen of the Year and the Ted Willhoite Legacy Award from the Grapevine Chamber. He received the Historic Preservation Award in 2019.

Ted Ware
Ted Ware graduated as valedictorian from Grapevine High School in 1950 when he established his business, Ted R. Ware Painting, which continues to operate today as Ware Painting by his sons. He was a Charter Member of Memorial Baptist Church where he served in various positions for sixty years. He served 10 years on the Grapevine Planning and Zoning Commission, then served on the Grapevine City Council from 1979 until 2008. Ted R. Ware Plaza in Grapevine was named for him, and he was the recipient of the D. E. Box Citizen of the Year in 2001, and he and his wife, Gloria, received the Ted Willhoite Legacy Award in 2008.
